Hispanic Heritage Month

Motive

Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated from September 15th to October 15th, is an essential time for high schools to honor the rich cultural contributions of Hispanic and Latinx communities. Through events, lessons, and discussions, students gain a deeper understanding of the history, traditions, and achievements of Hispanic Americans.

Recognizing Hispanic heritage in schools promotes cultural awareness, fosters inclusivity, and encourages students to appreciate the diversity within their own communities. By celebrating this month, high schools help students embrace multiculturalism and create a more respectful and informed environment for all.

During this time Eagle News has presented information in English and Spanish to recognize the significance of our rich and diverse student community. With over 50 % of our student body being of Hispanic descent, it is critical to embrace the heritage of our community.

So far this month our student organization, UNIDAD, took time to help decorate our front lobby and display case. Throughout the building are signs acknowledging Hispanic Heritage Month and Latino's and Latina's.

Also this month two Hispanic motivational speakers featured from Gear-Up spoke to our sophomore class. The speakers focused on the strength of proper goal setting. The presentation was engaging and our students did a great job of participation.

NASD featured in a CNN Special

The CNN article "For newly arrived immigrant children, this lawyer’s help extends far beyond the courtroom" highlights the work of immigration lawyer Megan Stuart, who not only represents children in legal matters but also provides them with comprehensive support. Stuart helps young immigrants navigate complex legal processes while addressing their emotional, educational, and social needs. Her dedication underscores the challenges these children face and the importance of holistic support systems for immigrant families.

Although featured in September's Newsletter we wanted to re-run this article.

Midmarks: A Time To Review and Reflect

Midmark is the middle point of time between the start of a quarter and when it concludes. Quarter 1 stared on August 26 and ends October 30. Students have one month to enrich and improve.

Review is to look over or examine something carefully to understand or improve it: Students should take time to review their academic progress by regularly checking grades for individual assignments, quizzes, and tests. Identify patterns (e.g., consistent strengths or weaknesses) in subject areas or skills. Through Infinite Campus students can see how well they are meeting academic goals and consider adjustments needed for improvement.

Reflection requires students to think deeply, often to learn from it or make improvements. When students reflect they can begin to think of the things they can do proactively to improve their academic performance. Consider what habits help students get the best academic response (completed assignments, academic growth, improved good grades and scores.
